Kaspars Zariņš

Born on April 10, 1962, in Riga, Latvia.

The sign by which the painting of Kaspars Zariņš is recognized, its trademark, is an image called the Pedant by the artist himself – it stepped onto the scene about 13 or 14 years ago.
True, even earlier, there was an image that possessed features of the Pedant, but then we would call it the alchemist, the painter, the restorer or some other name. The Pedant – it is a huge success, an image that is able to communicate with the audience and the media, an image that provides the key to the painting of Kaspars Zariņš. The presence of the Pedant is palpable even when the artist has not reserved a space for him in the picture and the only things that are there are flower patterns, rhythmical play of waves, a lone tower, a boat, and the never-absent bright spot on the horizon which, depending on the mood, is either the sun or the moon. It seems the only ones capable to compete with him are the dogs. The Pedant could be hailing from the east or the west – it’s hard to tell, there is something in him from Central Asia, Byzantium or Venice. At times, he is fascinated by the splendour of the One Thousand and One Nights and the Moorish architecture, at other times – the Early Renaissance in Italy. The Pedant – always frank, open and naïve – will never shed the veil of secrecy, just like the sculpture of the Middle Ages.
And still, as crucial as the Pedant is, even more pivotal to the painting of Kaspars Zariņš is the use of colour. I realize that, by saying this, I am belittling the whole system of images, put together by the artist, to which I’ve got used to and which has commanded respect, in particular because of its consistent nature. Nevertheless, the most fundamental aspect of the painting of Kaspars Zariņš is the colour, the way how colours sound off each other, the range of emotions and experiences they bring about. The artist’s painting is boldly colour-rich and saturated, courageous and daring, what’s already bright he plays it up even brighter, making it shout with joy or howl in despair. Casting aside the irksome notion of “what comes first, what comes afterwards”, the success rests in the ability to balance the graphical, the drawing, with the feeling of colour. The spaces in the pictures of Kaspars Zariņš keep getting bigger. The playful vibe, so typical to his painting years ago, is disappearing. There is no more the Pedant with a pastry or butterfly net, instead we have “Prometheus” and “The Eucharist”. These are broad, impressive compositions, not only due to their thematic realization and the significance of the contents, but also due to the structure of their form reminding us that Kaspars Zariņš has graduated from the Department of Monumental Painting at the Art Academy.
