Aleksejs Naumovs

Born on January 10, 1955, in Riga, Latvia.

Almost always, it is a particular place – Paris, Rome, Venice, New York, Rīga, Rundāle, Piebalga, Kurzeme or Latgale, embodying the mood of an instant created by light – that gives an impetus to the paintings of Aleksejs Naumovs. The artist possesses love for the sun, so often exhibited by those living in northern latitudes. The long and dark autumns and gloomy winters make one go searching for the sun and light to Italy and Spain. Niklāvs Strunke found it on the Isle of Capri, Eduards Kalniņš, the teacher of Aleksejs Naumovs, – in Positano and Rome. Another, no less important place in his painting studies was occupied by Indulis Zariņš, professor of the Art Academy.
Aleksejs Naumovs spends a lot of time working outdoors, not just because he likes it and is good at doing it – it is essential for his painting, since the colours and lights he brings alive on canvas cannot come from the studio, they can only be found, observed and painted in nature. It is for this reason that the old masters of painting worked en plein air, gathering honey, like bees, for their paintings that were composed in the studio. Aleksejs has perfected his alla prima painting style to such a degree that his paintings are both started and finished outdoors. Professor Imants Vecozols once said, jokingly, that he would not dare going to paint outdoors with Naumovs because the stakes would be too high…
The motifs chosen by the artist may seem risky – the canals of Venice, the River Seine and the Cathedral of Notre Dame, palms and emerald blue sea in Nice or Monte Carlo. If painted exclusively in studio, there would be a risk of becoming too “picturesque”. At the Academy, professor Romis Bēms taught how to feel if the painting is any good. At the time, the criterion seemed very strange – you would have to feel whether the painting breathes or not. With time, I came to understand that this “criterion” merits attention, even though it is difficult to use it in analyzing the work of art. The paintings of Aleksejs breathe, almost always.
The painting of Aleksejs Naumovs may be characterized as spontaneous, emotional, rich in atmosphere, but it is not determined by the motif of the picture or the particular place, but by the light of the moment captured in the painting and how it affects colour and form. Dabs of blue, green, pink and red, spread on canvas seemingly at random, in fact impart structure to the space, with very little left to chance. Landscape has always been an important and essential part of our painting, thanks to the work of Vilhelms Purvītis and his school. There have been periods, albeit brief, when interest in landscape declined, but as witnessed in paintings of Aleksejs Naumovs – nature continues to be the source of artist’s inspiration even in the 21st century.
