Osvalds Zvejsalnieks

Terra Vitae

30.07.2014 - 05.09.2014

Osvalds Zvejsalnieks says: „Painting to me is a way of self-expression. In all genres I have been tackling only a few subjects, the main of them being EARTH, PEASANT and his WORK. I paint fast, though my artworks come along slowly as I do a lot of repainting. The very process of painting is a hard, strenuous work to me, satisfaction is brought only by the result that I find to be a success. I think that colour in painting like a sound in music is able to accumulate a certain emotional tension. Then a painter has to emotionally charge the painting by juxtaposing and balancing the colour tones and their relationships. That emotionally charged colour is the ONLY feature of good painting.”

Osvalds Zvejsalnieks (b.1944) paints what he is familiar with, understands and loves. It is the scenic nature of Latgale with its birch groves, lakes, the bright sun and the nicest people that own this land called Mara’s land with a great history and magnificent traditions. The clay of Latgale is turned into brightly glazed ceramics; the Latgalian people’s grief, longing and love manifest themselves in folksongs, Osvalds Zvejsalnieks does not cease to paint Latgale, this land of his. His latest works will be shown at the exhibition Terra Vitae in the gallery Daugava from July 30 through September 5.
