Dainis Pundurs
Porcelain and lucid dreaming
06.12.2017 - 27.01.2018
Artworks created by Dainis Pundurs during the last three years will be on view in the exhibition. This exhibition may be considered a continuation of his quest to explore the relationship between ornamentation and geometry. This began while he was working on the Honey Mania cycle (2009 – 2012).
Although the artist had previously worked with porcelain, Porcelain and Lucid Dreaming is the result of his most recent encounter with this still intriguing material. About 26 years ago, when first working with porcelain, a dream on a summer’s night inspired him to create new technical solutions for porcelain artworks. The results were displayed in his first solo show Bone China (1995). This was followed by the surrealistic exhibition, Dry River (2008) featuring white porcelain figurines of roaches frozen in the bed of an extinct river. It was held in the Daugava museum on the island of Dole.
The artist admits that a hidden aspect of porcelain encourages him to create a spatial vision and to approach the limits of what is possible with porcelain. In his vision he exceeds the limitations of three-dimensional space and the rules of gravitation.
