Jānis Kupčs

In Search of Lost Villages

09.11.2016 - 10.12.2016

The works from series Looking For the Lost Villages by Jānis Kupčs have already been exhibited in the Center of Performing Arts “Jūras vārti” last summer in Ventspils. This november these works will be exhibited at Daugava Gallery in Riga.

Jānis Kupčs graduated from the Department of Painting at Art Academy of Latvia in 1998, although he initially wished to become a ceramist. Since 2002 the artist has lived in Sārnate and works at Ventspils Art School.

He has been actively participating in exhibitions since 2000, working both in painting and ceramics. Jānis Kupčs’ means of expression are visually active – bright colours, abstract large scale paintings that attract and address the viewer directly, but the subtext, the artist’s personal revelations and source for imagery have to be looked for in reality. The leitmotiv is shapes of curved trees, straight lines which repeat in parallel fields, creating impressive, uniform compositions, appealing both to lovers of realistic landscape painting and those of abstract painting.
