Why do works like these emerge in my workshop? How they originate and what the source of the inspiration leading to their creation is, isn’t clear even to me. We can attribute certain influences and impulses to their creation and superficially interpret them with some degree of credibility, but the real reason still eludes us and remains an intriguing and stimulating mystery. The working process itself is a very real craft involving ceramic materials, technical innovations, new tools, investigations, and searching for new information. But what direction do I take? Ultimately it is my choice and the choice and resulting objects are a secret, a genuine secret that defies revelation. But is it an obsession that drives my choice? If so, there is neither a choice, nor a secret and “The Honey Mania” results. In reality, the exhibition has nothing to do with Winnie the Pooh’s marvelous sense of smell. “Honey” is simply a metaphor for that uplifting pleasurable feeling that arises while viewing lavishly ornamented crafted creations. It is a visual phenomenon that manifests itself in extremes ranging from triviality and tastelessness to wisdom and genuine beauty. “The Honey Mania” is a result of investigation and contemplation on various manifestations of decorativeness implemented in ceramics stoneware. This focuses our awareness on the basic concept of decoration that involves cultural aspects, esthetic, philosophical and mystical significance as well as rhythms of nature. — Dainis Pundurs
