"The sculptor Vilnis Titāns (1944–2006) expressed himself most vividly in granite, a medium matching his northern temperament and his artistic goals. Although he also worked with bronze, wood and marble, his greatness and vigour, world outlook and passion were best expressed in granite. He was inspired by Latvia's nature, folklore, etnography and long history. Every single corner of Latvia was a source of inspiration. Vilnis Titāns would never refer to Latvia as a territory or a state. Latvia was his native land, his fatherland, his home, a sacred place. Vilnis family friend, Bernhard Welchli, a former student of the Latvian University now living in the German city of Konstanz, writes: 'When I studied in Latvia ten years ago, I learnt a lot at the University, but what Latvia is really like I learnt mostly from both of you. Vilnis taught me that it is worth trying to implement our plans even if we have many and each plan requires much time and strength. Everything we complete is as significant as what we start'." ...
